Cupping drainage: what it is for, benefits and when to do it

Cupping drainage is a bodywork technique that uses glass cups to create a controlled suction effect on the skin. It is used mainly for swelling and heaviness, and is usually combined with essential oils chosen for each person. We explain what it involves and when it is worth it.

What cupping drainage is

Unlike manual lymphatic drainage, which works with gentle hand pressure, cupping drainage uses glass cups that create a gentle vacuum on the skin. That suction effect mobilises the tissues deeply and with far less mechanical pressure on the joints.

In our version it is a dynamic technique: the cup moves across the treated area instead of staying in place, which allows large areas such as the legs, abdomen or back to be covered continuously.

What it is for

Its most frequent use is the feeling of fluid retention: swelling in the legs and ankles, heaviness at the end of the day, a bloated abdomen.

It is also used when a greater feeling of lightness and a more even skin appearance is sought, for example as part of an anti-cellulite or slimming programme.

The essential oils are chosen beforehand according to what is needed, which reinforces the feeling of wellbeing during the session.

Cupping drainage vs. pressotherapy

They are complementary techniques, not equivalents. Pressotherapy is a mechanical massage that applies controlled pressure through boots or sleeves: it is more suitable for tired legs and for those seeking a very enveloping feeling.

Cupping drainage works in a more localised, manual way, allowing the intensity to be adjusted area by area. Many people combine both within a programme.

When to do it and how much it costs

It can be done as a one-off session when a specific result is needed, or integrated into a multi-session programme when a sustained progression is sought.

At Estetika Masane the cupping drainage session costs €65. We work by appointment, Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 18:00, at Iturribide kalea 6, Zarautz.
